A Flatpak app cannot open a folder or external drive

Flatpak applications run with sandbox boundaries, so file access may require a portal or an explicitly granted filesystem permission appropriate to the task.

APPROVEDDOCUMENTED ONLYChecked 2026-10-15

Symptoms

What you may notice

  • A file picker cannot see a folder that the host can access.
  • An app can open one file but cannot browse a directory or external drive.
  • Access changes after moving a file or changing the mount point.

Possible causes

Why this can happen

  • The application is sandboxed and the target is outside its permitted filesystem view.
  • The desktop portal or file chooser path was not used for the operation.
  • A mount point or permission grant does not match the current path.

Diagnostics

A safe way to narrow it down

  1. 01

Identify the Flatpak application and the exact folder or mount point needed; avoid granting access to unrelated data.

  2. 02

Try the application's normal file chooser, which can mediate access through a portal when supported.

  3. 03

Review the documented Flatpak filesystem and portal model before changing permissions.

  4. 04

After a narrowly scoped permission change, test with a non-sensitive file and remove the grant if it is no longer needed.

Solutions

Documented approaches

Use the desktop file portal

DOCUMENTED

Prefer the app's normal file chooser and portal flow because it can grant access to the selected file or folder without exposing the entire host filesystem.

Read supporting source

Grant only the required filesystem path

DOCUMENTED WITH LIMITS

If a portal is insufficient, use the documented Flatpak permission mechanisms for the smallest necessary path. Do not treat full filesystem access as a default fix.

Alternatives and limits

Keep the trade-offs visible

Copy a non-sensitive working file into an already accessible folder

This avoids widening permissions but may not suit large, removable or continuously updated datasets.
